Nature
Suriname’s nature is defined by its vast, largely untouched rainforests, covering nearly 93% of the country. This makes it one of the world’s most forest-rich nations. Within these forests, a remarkable variety of plant and animal life thrives. Jaguars, monkeys, and a wide array of bird species, including macaws and toucans, inhabit the dense canopies. Rivers crisscross the landscape, supporting diverse aquatic ecosystems with caimans, giant river otters, and numerous fish species. The plant life ranges from towering trees to smaller, specialized species, many of which are still being studied for their potential medicinal uses. Suriname has established several protected areas, including the Central Suriname Nature Reserve, to preserve this exceptional biodiversity for the future.
